Follow the Money, Case No. 1:
Former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch, famously known for being publicly unfriendly, now wants the public to be friendly with their wallets.
Lynch was known as Beast Mode during his playing days.
So, naturally, he has opened an apparel store at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.
You can get Beast Mode T-shirts, hats, keychains and COVID-19 masks. Or you can get his most infamous expression, “I’m just here so I won’t get fined,” embroidered onto your apparel.
You may recall that Lynch hated answering to the media, and sometimes at news conferences, he would answer each question again and again by saying, “I’m just here so I won’t get fined.”
Follow the Money, Case No. 2:
Here’s some unusual math:
Because of Covid, the NCAA’s revenues in the last fiscal year dropped to $521 million, down from $1 billion in the previous 12 months. That was a 50% drop.
But NCAA president Mark Emmert saw his salary rise — he made $2.9 million in the last fiscal year, according to ESPN.
Most of the NCAA’s lost revenue came from the cancellation of March Madness.
However, Emmert and other top NCAA officials reported a slight increase in pay during the year. Donald Remy, recently confirmed for a position in the Biden administration, made $1.7 million as the NCAA’s chief operating officer during the 2019-20 year; I assume he took a pay cut moving into government. Executive vice president Stan Wilcox made $1.3 million.
Ten NCAA employees, led by Emmert, made more than $500,000 in the 2019-20 fiscal year.
Where will these people find equivalent salaries once the NCAA is tossed into the trash heap? Their best bet, I believe, would be the IOC or FIFA, or do the Teamsters still have some well-compensated poo bahs?
