It was a peaceful protest; America reacted volcanically.
Last week, home-grown terrorists tried to tear down democracy as we know it.
They went to the U.S. Capitol building – with Molotov cocktails and baseball bats and pipe bombs and climbing gear and riot helmets and gas masks and pepper spray and explosives.

They chanted HANG MIKE PENCE.
They threatened to kill the speaker of the House.
They nearly crushed a police officer to death stuck in a doorway.
They dragged another officer down some steps while chanting USA USA.

How did we get from there to here?
Well, in all honesty, we probably were already there, or here –
The anger, the bias, the hate, the lack of decency or compassion.
The president – now twice impeached, and that’s a hard trick to perform – stoked that anger, inflated the hate and incited a riot.
We’ve withstood it for the moment as a republic, but it’s coming back.
America might not withstand it for long.
